As our parents plan to move to the next phase in their lives, they are often faced with the daunting task of “Where will I go? There’s just so much stuff… what do I keep, what do I take with me, which of my children wants my collection of Lladro, what furniture is going to fit in my new place, what about cleaning up after I leave here?” And on and on and on. It’s a lot for them to manage.
Many older adults have not moved in 30, 40 or even 50 years and have accumulated a lifetime of items. Then there’s the emotional aspect of moving from their comfort zone to a totally new environment. Leaving behind the memories is a very stressful event. We understand that and offer great patience and compassion to make this transition as smooth and carefree as possible. .
Adult children and friends of our aging parents want to help but they may be struggling to balance the needs of their family obligations AND their careers. For family members living a great distance away, travel becomes an issue. Just how much time will they have to organize, orchestrate and complete this enormous task? If illness or death precipitates a move, the family may already be drained both emotionally and physically.
